Slovak is the native language of approximately 5 million people, primarily ethnic Slovaks. The written standard of the Slovak language was developed between the late 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century. There are three major Slovak dialects — Eastern, Central, and Western — and all dialects of Slovak and Czech are mutually comprehensible.
