Romanian, a Balkan Romance language, is the native language of approximately 24 to 26 million people, primarily in Romania and Moldova, and is spoken by another 4 million people as a second language. It’s an official and national language of both Romania and Moldova and is one of the official languages of the European Union. Romanian speakers live in many regions and countries worldwide, with large populations in Italy, Spain, Germany, the United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States. It’s estimated that the largest Romanian-speaking communities outside Romania and Moldova are located in Ukraine (about 300,000 speakers) and Israel (about 250,000 speakers).
