Properly called Khalkha Mongolian, after the four Khalkha provinces that were carved out of this region in the 17th century, Mongolian is the official language of Mongolia. Closely related dialects are spoken in the Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region of China. The number of speakers across all Mongolian dialects is estimated at about 5 million, including the vast majority of the residents of Mongolia.
