Latvian is one of Europe’s most ancient languages, related only to Lithuanian. These two languages form a separate branch of the whole European language classification — the Baltic languages. Latvian is the official language of Latvia as well as one of the official languages of the European Union. The Latvian government has been running programs to promote Latvian since the 1990s. In Latvia today, nine out of every ten inhabitants speak Latvian. There are about 1.3 million native Latvian speakers in Latvia and 100,000 abroad. Altogether, 2 million people, or 80% of the population of Latvia, speak Latvian.
