Vietnamese is the official language of Vietnam, spoken natively by around 86 million people (4 million of whom live abroad) and as a second language by 11 million. The Vietnamese language has three regional variations and is widely used in the neighboring countries of Laos, Thailand, and Cambodia, as well as in Australia and the Czech Republic. Notably, Vietnamese is one of the few Asian languages that uses the Latin alphabet rather than traditional Asian writing systems.
Vietnam, the world’s 16th most populous country with a developing economy, ranks 32nd globally by nominal GDP and 21st by purchasing power parity, and is among the 10 most foreigner-friendly nations. Its economy is based on agriculture (primarily rice cultivation), bauxite mining, and rapidly growing manufacturing, IT, and high-tech sectors, while tourism contributes significantly. Vietnam is the world’s largest producer of cashew nuts and black pepper (each representing one-third of global market share) and the second-largest rice and coffee exporter globally.
Electronics, textiles, footwear, transportation products, wooden products, seafood, steel, and rice are among the country’s main exports, while imports consist of machinery, industrial equipment, electronic parts petroleum products, raw materials for textile industries, automobiles, and chemical products.
