Slovenian, or Slovene, is a South Slavic language. It is one of the three official languages of Slovenia. As the country is part of the European Union, Slovene is also one of the EU’s 24 official and working languages. It is considered the first written Slavic language, as the first known manuscripts in this language are dated to the ninth century. Despite being spoken by only about 2.5 million speakers, the majority of whom live in Slovenia, Slovenian has 46 dialects, making it the most diverse Slavic language.
